Adams was born to a U.S. Army officer in Italy and then grew up in Castle Rock Colorado. The early 1990s were when Adams started dancing and performing professionally at the Boulder Dinner Theatre as well as the Country Dinner Playhouse. Then in Minnesota, at a local theater, she was cast as a character in a mock film documentary on beauty contests called Drop Dead Gorgeous. Her screen debut was as the bright, beautiful contestant. After that, she relocated in Los Angeles in order to pursue a career as an actor. Discovered by the actress Norma Shearer Leigh secured a contract with MGM and began her film career in the late 1940s. Leigh was a star in a variety of popular films during the following decade, such as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (from 1960) as well as Living It Up (1954) with Martin Lewis.
